WeatherBug Publishes Application Protocol Interface

New tools available today enable software developers to integrate WeatherBug’s live local weather data into an array of software applications for richer content, relevance and enhanced efficiency

Seattle, WA - June 28, 2005 - WeatherBug CTO Chris Sloop unveiled a new application protocol interface (API) during the Gnomedex 5.0 conference in Seattle that will enable any developer to build rich applications that integrate live, local weather information and alerts. The API spec and key can now be downloaded at http://api.weatherbug.com.

Software developers who participate in the API program will be able to access live weather and wind data, severe weather alert checks, three-day forecasts, and seven-day high/low temperatures from over 8,000 WeatherBug Tracking Stations across the U.S. This proprietary network of weather monitoring stations – which is primarily based at schools - is the largest of its kind delivering live data conditions, where others’ data can be up to an hour old.

“This marks the first time that life-saving weather alerts have ever been made available to software developers to integrate into their products,” said Sloop. “It’s one of a series of initiatives we’re planning over the next several weeks to reach out to developers and technology enthusiasts. We view the developer community as a critical partner in our efforts to deliver the most local weather available in the U.S.”

“Using our API, developers could conceivably create entire new home automation software applications that control the sprinkler system or opens/closes the windows when the local temperature reaches 75 degrees or higher, or perhaps a Firefox browser extension that streams live conditions,” Sloop continued. “The possibilities are endless and we’re looking forward to seeing what the creative development community creates using live, accurate weather data from virtually any neighborhood in the country.”

The API announcement comes on the heels of last month’s launch of the WeatherBug Backyard Network. The Network empowers consumers to collect, report and share weather information from their own WeatherBug Backyard Tracking Stations with the 19 million unique WeatherBug visitors* a month.
